About
Thirty-Four Years Raising Sons

ABOUT RICHARD
For 34 years, while helping to raise nine children, I’ve studied what truly shapes boys into capable, resilient men. The answer isn’t found in parenting techniques, but in the invisible architecture of daily life – the rhythms, struggles, and small decisions that build character.
My unique laboratory was a pioneering partnership. As my wife, Helena, founded the 30% Club and built her career in finance, I worked from home, providing the stable centre for our sons and daughters. This decades-long, up-close observation revealed a truth: modern masculine development is less about explicit teaching and more about creating the conditions for agency, resilience, and purpose to grow.
My understanding of masculine development wasn’t formed through theory alone. Before my return to Christianity, I spent years as a Zen Buddhist meditation teacher and dharma heir, working with men and women on developing focused attention and self-awareness through contemplative practice. That experience taught me how daily practices – repeated disciplines – shape capability in ways that conversation and advice cannot. It’s a principle that runs through all effective formation.
This wasn’t progressive parenting. We didn’t negotiate with children, optimise their self-esteem, or celebrate their “unique journey.” But nor was it joyless discipline. We maintained standards while creating genuine adventure. We expected contribution while ensuring real play. We understood that boys become men through challenge and responsibility, yes – but also through laughter, exploration, and the freedom that comes from clear boundaries. What I observed was how traditional formation principles – hierarchy, responsibility, delayed gratification, earned respect – actually work when applied with warmth and consistency over decades.
My work now is to translate that lived experience into practical wisdom for parents who recognise that modern approaches are failing their sons. I challenge the therapeutic culture that dominates parenting advice and offer a different model – one grounded in what actually produces capable men, not what makes parents feel comfortable.
GUIDANCE FOR THE CRITICAL YEARS
I provide direct mentorship and strategic guidance to parents of young men aged 16 to 30 who are struggling with motivation, direction, or purpose. This is practical mentorship, not therapeutic conversation. It is strategic guidance from someone who has actually done what most experts only theorise about. I don’t offer affirmation or emotional support. I offer clear assessment of what’s actually happening and what traditional formation principles suggest.
My work addresses the questions that standard advice overlooks:
- How do you create conditions for genuine independence, not just compliance?
- What builds resilience without fostering brittleness or resentment?
- How do you counteract the cultural forces that undermine confidence and purpose in young men?
- What daily patterns, over time, cultivate authentic capability and drive?
Through focused conversation and ongoing partnership, we diagnose these patterns and build a practical plan to change them.
This guidance is for parents who sense that raising capable sons requires more than technique. It is for those ready to examine the deeper architecture of family life- the unspoken rhythms, the assigned challenges, the quality of presence- that ultimately forges a young man’s path.
This guidance is not for everyone. If you’re looking for someone to validate your parenting choices, celebrate your son’s “authenticity,” or help him “find himself,” there are countless therapists and coaches available. My work is for parents who recognise that young men need more than understanding- they need standards, challenge, and connection to something greater than their feelings.
